The Durrand Glacier Chalet
To the east the large Durrand Glacier with its high peaks dominates the panorama, to the south gentle meadows with jade alpine lakes surrounded by large waterfalls provide a perfect taste of the hiking in this area. The view opens up generously to the west, with the deep-forested valley of Carnes Creek, which is crowned by the glaciated Monashee Mountains in the distance. The northern view is dominated by Tumbledown Mountain. The large sun deck at the Chalet definitely offers superb "front row seating" as you reflect on the early morning hours or witness the most ethereal light-show as the sun descends behind the Monashee Mountain Range. The Durrand Glacier Chalet offers very comfortable accommodation for up to 20 hikers in 11 bright pine wood bedrooms with full bedding and quilts. In addition to the cozy dayroom, which is built with round-logs and pine wood siding, there is a quiet reading room. The chalet-style shower building and the main Chalet are fully equipped with cold and hot water and with 110 volt inverted AC power. Besides a separate toilet building with "Swiss quality cleanliness" there is also a flushing toilet inside the main Chalet. All meals are prepared by our talented cook at the Chalet, using only the best available ingredients. Vegetables are from an organic farmer, herbs are grown in a cold frame at the Chalet, jams are homemade from organic berries and all baking done with organic stone-ground flour. A highlight of each day is the afternoon tea meal with European tortes and savory snacks.
